Gary Hermance grew up in Miami, Florida, where he was born January 15, 1946. He received a bachelor's degree in English from the University of Oklahoma in 1968, and a master's degree in English from the University of Florida in 1970.
Following the completion of his master's degree, he began work in agricultural communications as an editorial assistant at the University of Florida. In 1972, he was named art director for the Institute of Food and Agricultural Science (IFAS) at the university.
In the mid-1970s, he became head of the printing and graphics section of IFAS editorial, and in 1990, he was named associate director of IFAS Information.
He joined ACE in 1978 and received the ACE Pioneer Award and an Award of Excellence for graphic design.
He died April 24, 1993, in Gainesville. He was 47.
